FAQs

Dry skin on your feet is a condition that may involve peeling and chapped skin. Increasing dryness makes the skin less elastic and cracks appear more readily, this can lead to itching or eczema. Untreated dry feet often result in problems with calluses, corns and cracked heels.

Exactly what causes dry feet is not known. It is possible that the fat and water content of the skin may be of significance. As we grow older, the number of sebaceous glands in the skin is reduced and thus our ability to retain moisture deteriorates. There can also be an inherited predisposition to dry skin.

As we get older, the activity of the sebaceous glands declines and in combination with a weakened ability to retain water, the skin on our feet become more prone to dryness.

The weather can also have an impact. In winter, when the relative humidity falls, both indoors and outdoors, the problems tend to increase in severity.

A common recommendation is to avoid showering/bathing several times a day and avoid the excessive use of soap, as this tends to dry out the skin. It is recommended to use a rub lotion or cream/balm into the skin one or more times a day. Commonly the main active ingredient tends to be urea.

Xurea® Foot balm is perfectly formulated using sixteen active ingredients whilst limiting potential sensitising ingredients such as paraffin, preservatives, lanolin and fragrances often contained in other creams and balms.

For dry feet, Xurea® Foot balm’s formulation can be used to effectively help the condition.

Unlike other creams or balms Xurea® Foot balm contains an intensely hydrating combination of urea, glycerin shea butter and sodium lactate meaning you only need to use it once or twice a day in most situations. A noticeable effect can be seen within a few days, often after the very first treatment.

A callus is an area of hard and thickened skin. Calluses normally occur on the heel, the ball of the foot or on the big toe. Calluses lack well-defined edges and the appearance of the skin changes character and frequently turns yellowish or brown. There is also decreased sensitivity in the affected area compared to other parts of the foot.

Calluses appear when we subject our feet to friction and pressure. The most common cause of calluses is ill-fitting shoes. For example, women who wear high-heel shoes frequently get calluses on the ball of the foot and sports people such as tennis, badminton or football players increase the pressure on the foot, so can often have problems with calluses.

When the skin’s natural cell renewal process is disrupted in some way, it can no longer shed dead skin cells and these form a hard layer. In connection with this, the skin becomes dry and calluses appear. If these calluses are not treated, they can cause pain and lead to painful cracks.

Cracked heels occur when the skin around the heel cracks. Cracked heels are a very common problem and affect women as well as men of all ages.

We expose our feet to a variety of stresses in terms of standing, walking, exercising and we do not always wear comfortable shoes. If the skin on the feet is also dry and therefore less elastic, slight cracks occur as the skin cannot stretch to allow the heel to expand slightly when it is subjected to pressure and stress.
